- Rape (Section 375): Sexual activity that takes place without a woman’s consent is referred to as rape. The punishment for rape can range from imprisonment for a term that may extend to seven years, to imprisonment for life, along with a fine.
- Sexual harassment (Section 354A): Any unwanted sexually explicit physical, verbal, or nonverbal behavior is considered sexual harassment. The punishment for sexual harassment can range from imprisonment for a term that may extend to three years, to a fine, or both.
- Sexual assault (Section 354): Any intentional physical contact with a person’s privates without the person’s consent is considered a sexual assault. The punishment for sexual assault can range from imprisonment for a term that may extend to two years, to a fine, or both.
- Voyeurism (Section 354C): Voyeurism is the act of observing or photographing a woman doing a private act against her consent. The punishment for voyeurism can range from imprisonment for a term that may extend to three years, to a fine, or both.
- Stalking (Section 354D): The term “stalking” refers to any act of following or making contact with a woman despite obvious indifference and causing her worry or distress. The punishment for stalking can range from imprisonment for a term that may extend to three years, to a fine, or both.
- Child sexual abuse (Section 376AB and 376DA): Various sexual offenses against children are recognized by the IPC, including penetrative sexual assault, sexual assault, and sexual harassment. The punishment for child sexual abuse can range from imprisonment for a term that may extend to life, along with a fine.
Punishment of Sexual Offences under IPC
- Rape – Section 376, IPC
- Punishment: imprisonment for a term not less than 10 years but which may extend to life imprisonment, and shall also be liable to fine.
